1. STYLE
Is the bandage dress back? Between Lili Reinhart’s Miss Congeniality-inspired Hervé Léger moment, Amal Clooney and Olivia Dean in bandage-inspired looks, and even Michelle Obama in custom Hervé Léger on Jimmy Kimmel last year — the dress that defined the era of going-out culture might be quietly creeping back into conversation! Interestingly, Azzedine Alaïa is credited with inventing the bandage dress, he was apparently inspired by Egyptian mummies. I remember a time when owning an Hervé Léger bandage dress was considered the height of fashion. And with the current nostalgia cycle at its peak for 2010s dressing, it makes sense that an old trend would become new again! Personally, I’m not sure I’m quite ready to revisit that era!!
2. BOOKS
My friend Becca just released her second novel, Back Where We Started! I was lucky enough to read an advance copy this summer, and absolutely devoured it! It’s the story of Katie and Drew, childhood best friends turned first loves who bonded over their big, ambitious dreams. She wanted to be a famous actress; he wanted to be president. Flash forward: Katie’s now known professionally as Blair Banks and actually did become an actress, while Drew is… decidedly not the president. When Katie returns to their small Pennsylvania hometown, she and Drew run into each other and discover their spark is very much still alive! It’s got all the best tropes — second chance romance, celebrity/civilian dynamic, and yes, a classic “there’s only one bed” situation! Becca describes it as her ode to Notting Hill and Sweet Home Alabama. If you’re looking for a fall read that will completely pull you in, this is it! So proud of her!
3. BEAUTY
Martha Stewart made her name as an icon of entertaining, but seeing how she looks at 85, now she’s a beauty icon as well! She launched a skincare brand, ELM Biosciences, last year in partnership with a dermatologist, and this Harper’s Bazaar interview is Martha gold: completely no-nonsense and full of gems! Her beauty routine is simple: never sleep in your makeup, hair washed three times a week, and weekly manicure and pedicure. Her selfie tips are also spot on: hold the camera right, make sure the light is directly on your face, look in a mirror while you’re shooting so you can see what you actually look like, and immediately delete the ones you don’t like. At 85 she says she feels like she’s 20 with one exception “I don’t act like a stupid 20-year-old!”
4. FASHION
Talk about turning your dreams into reality! Rachel Ojuromi is a 22-year-old Nigerian content creator who, unable to access the fashion world she loved, simply built one around her! She rose to internet fame strutting through the streets of Lagos in corseted gowns and fringed skirts, and last week she made her runway debut at Chanel! The video that got her there was a recreation of Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel Métiers d’Art show on those same Lagos streets. The video went viral, landed on the house’s radar, and she got the call! Go follow her if you don’t already — she is so magnetic!
5. TRAVEL
If you’ve got the itch for some solo travel, this roundup of travel editors’ favorite destinations for going it alone is a great place to start! The picks are really varied: Paris (better alone because you never have to negotiate museums or shopping with anyone), Copenhagen, Singapore, Vienna, and even New York City! As someone who has done a bit of solo travel and found it genuinely transformative, I recommend everyone travels on their own at least once!
6. INDUSTRY
If you’ve been following the Kelly Clarkson vs. Brooklyn toy store drama, it’s part of a larger conversation about why in-store customer service has gotten so bad and the problem is deeper than just one rude sales associate! Low wages, limited benefits, and pandemic-era hiring shortages have created a spiral effect where retailers can’t keep good staff long enough to train them properly! The median hourly wage for retail salespeople is $16, with a 60% average industry turnover rate. There’s also an interesting point about younger employees who missed out on social development during the pandemic simply having a different idea of what good customer service looks like.
