1. BEAUTY
This oral history of Allure’s Best of Beauty Awards is such a fun read, especially if you’ve ever picked up a product because of their iconic little red seal! The awards launched in October 1996 with 234 winners, and the concept was genuinely controversial at the time. No women’s magazine had ever declared one product better than another, and the chairman of Condé Nast initially told the editor in chief she was “committing career suicide!” She did it anyway, and the rest is history! Some indie brands said the award literally saved their businesses. And that little red seal started just as a cover design element for the magazine, but eventually became a licensing revenue stream for Allure. A great read for any beauty lover!
2. FASHION
Fashion lovers, you’ll want to save this list of the best fall fashion exhibits! A few highlights: the Azzedine Alaïa exhibit at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco is the designer’s first-ever US exhibition and sounds extraordinary! Sofia Coppola curated an exhibition at Versailles with mood boards, costumes, and reconstructed spaces from her Marie Antoinette film. The DIVA exhibition at the Denver Art Museum features Bob Mackie looks worn by Tina Turner and Cher. And for 90s fashion lovers, Tate Britain is opening a show on 90s British art and fashion featuring Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen!
3. FRIENDSHIP
We’ve all been there — someone crosses your mind, you think “I should reach out” but then talk yourself out of it because too much time has passed. If this feels familiar, this guide to reconnecting with old friends is the nudge you need! The main takeaway is this: the awkwardness is almost entirely in our heads! Research shows people consistently underestimate how happy others will be to hear from them, and overestimate how much the other person is focused on the gap in communication. A few good tips: lead with a specific memory rather than a vague “we should catch up” and resist the urge to over-explain the silence!
4. STYLE
Guys, I’m obsessed with Lili Reinhart’s press tour styling for The Love Hypothesis! Her stylist Ib Abdel Nasser built the entire wardrobe around the visual language of early 2000s rom-coms, sourcing actual vintage pieces and commissioning recreations. The yellow slip dress from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the polka dot Nanette Lepore jacket from 13 Going on 30 (reportedly the only existing copy!), the lavender Hervé Léger bandage dress from Miss Congeniality…it’s just so good! And even her looks that haven’t been rom-com references have been hitting it out of the park, I’m a big fan of her styling!
5. CULTURE
Have you seen the iced coffee debate that took over the internet this week? A recruiter posted a TikTok saying Gen Z candidates are showing up to job interviews with iced coffees, which signals the interview is just “a stop on the list of errands for the day” and of course the comment section exploded! Hiring experts are split — most say it wouldn’t rule anyone out, but some still consider it a breach of unspoken professional etiquette. One recruiter makes the point that Gen Z largely entered the workforce during COVID via Zoom, so nobody actually taught them the rules of in-person interviewing! Personally I would never show up to any important meeting with a beverage, especially one like an iced coffee that makes noise and can leave a pool of condensation! Where do you land??
6. NYC
This roundup of the most anticipated restaurant openings in NYC this fall has me so excited! Going out to dinner and trying new restaurants is one of my favorite things about living here, so I’m definitely bookmarking a few of these places like June Baby, a new Filipino American cocktail bar in the East Village and Faux in TriBeCa which is being opened by famous restaurateur Keith McNally’s son who’s been bartending at Balthazar for years. The NYC restaurant scene always has something exciting on the horizon!
