1. NYC
As a pet owner, this one is very relevant to me! The NYC City Council just passed the SCOOP Act (yes, that’s genuinely what it’s called), a package of bills designed to address the city’s dog poop situation. Anyone who walked these sidewalks this past winter knows the situation was truly dire! Highlights include waste bag attachments on 1,200 public garbage cans and a volunteer composting program that would turn dog waste into soil for flower beds. Reeses and I are fully supportive of anything that makes NYC cleaner and more dog friendly!
2. BUSINESS
Big news in the creator economy this week — Shay Mitchell just sold BÉIS to Samsonite in a $210 million deal! She launched the brand in 2018 after getting frustrated with luggage either falling apart or costing a fortune, and eight years later she’s built something worth nine figures! As part of the deal, she’s selling about half her stake but staying on as a founder and head of creative so the brand should continue to feel like her. I’ve seen a lot of online chatter about the $210 million number, and how it stacks up to Rhode which had nearly identical revenue but sold for a billion dollars. If you’re curious, this is an interesting read on how the travel industry has a ceiling!
3. FINANCES
I know, I know…another “maxxing” trend, but bear with me on this one because the actual advice is genuinely useful! Moneymaxxing is less about cutting back and more about making your existing money work harder! Think stacking credit card rewards, using high-yield savings accounts for specific goals, and setting up automated transfers instead of relying on will power. One tip worth mentioning (that unfortunately, doesn’t apply to me): don’t forget to take full advantage of employer benefits like FSA funds, wellness stipends, and tuition reimbursement that often go unused! With inflation making everything feel like an uphill battle, “optimize what you have” feels way more motivating than “spend less.”
4. SOCIAL MEDIA
I’ll admit, this article kind of freaked me out as someone who spends a lot of time on her phone! Researchers found that the more years someone has spent on Instagram, the more likely they are to confuse a stranger’s face with their own! The theory is that prolonged exposure to the same homogenized beauty standards gradually erodes the brain’s ability to recognize what makes our own faces unique. The piece isn’t necessarily anti social media, but it does make a compelling case for building more diverse feeds and spending more time connecting with your physical self rather than just a screen! A good reminder to put the phone and the computer down and take a look around — which is exactly what I’m trying to do during my vacation in California!
5. MENTAL HEALTH
Child star Christy Carlson Romano wrote this piece in Elle in response to Hayden Panettiere’s tragic death and it’s absolutely worth a read. She draws a comparison between early fame and CTE — not as a diagnosis persay, but as a framework for understanding the repeated impact on a developing mind. She argues we’ve built industries around protecting young athletes from long-term damage, but there’s no equivalent for child stars. The rejection, scrutiny, adult pressure, and the collapse of privacy…an industry that profits heavily from children’s talents shouldn’t be treating their wellbeing as an afterthought.
6. FASHION
Canada Goose just launched a campaign with the tagline “We do summer, too” — and it turns out, they’re not the only outerwear brand making a pivot! Moncler released its first dedicated warm-weather collection, Arc’teryx dropped what they’re calling “the world’s most advanced summer shirt,” and The North Face has been building out its warm-weather offerings for years! The driving factors are partly financial, but also genuinely climate-driven. Winters are getting shorter and milder, and summer is getting more extreme. Brands that built their entire identity around cold weather will have to adapt sooner rather than later!
