1. CULTURE
I know this article has been making the rounds this week, but I had to take an opportunity to weigh in. (Also, very timely since I’m heading to Nantucket for the first time this weekend!) A local shop owner put up a “No Influencers” sign and it’s gone viral. His argument is that locals are frustrated that their community is being treated like a backdrop rather than a place where people actually live and work. But I have to agree with Paige Lorenze’s take that the sign itself is the problem — why doesn’t it say “no filming or “no photography?” It really rubs me the wrong way that the owner is singling out an industry that is overwhelmingly made up of young women, and as someone who has built a career in this space I find it a bit demeaning. Rude behavior doesn’t belong to influencers alone, plus plenty of influencers are genuine advocates for small businesses they visit. I completely understand and respect when businesses don’t want people filming in their stores — and for the record I always try to keep a low profile and small footprint when I’m traveling or visiting new places for that reason. Anyways I talked at length about this in my weekly catch-up…I can’t wait to see Nantucket, and promise to be on my best behavior!
2. COMEDY
If you’re not already familiar with Mary Beth Barone, now is the time to get on board! I’ve been listening to her podcast, Ride, for a while now and saw the New York City taping of her first Netflix special, Galaxy Brain, which is finally out! The profile covers a lot of ground: her breakout Golden Globes red carpet interviews, her role in Overcompensating with her best friend Benito Skinner, and her thoughts on being a woman in Hollywood. She is super dry and deadpan, very witty, and one of my favorites so excited for the rest of the world to get to know her!
3. HEALTH
This NYT piece on small habits that make a big difference in midlife is worth the read! A few that stood out to me: interval training is apparently one of the best predictors of longevity (shorter but harder workouts), social connection is incredibly important for both mental and physical health, and getting the shingles vaccine may reduce your risk of dementia by 20% (crazy!) Also, going to bed at the same time every night is more important than how many hours you get. Small shifts, big payoff over time!
4. TRAVEL
If you have the travel bug and are already plotting fall and winter travel, this roundup of travel trends has some good ideas! Shoulder season travel is having a moment, the logic being popular destinations like Lake Como are infinitely more enjoyably once the crowds thin out. “Coolcations” are on the rise — think Iceland and the Scottish Highlands to escape the heat rather than chase the sun! And apparently experiential safaris are evolving beyond game drives into more immersive community visits and anti-poaching programs. I’m still very much hoping to plan a safari for my 40th and this is not helping me be patient about it!
5. FASHION
Have you noticed knitwear is trending right now? This piece breaks down why, and it’s quite interesting. It’s not just cozy sweats we’re talking about, a whole new generation of designers are treating knitwear as a space for innovation! There’s a Japanese designer who’s known for a half button-up shirt, half knitted sweater. A London brand is combining traditional fisherman sweater techniques with modern style. The theory is that after years of athleisure and a huge boom in synthetic fabrics, people are craving something that feels real and tactile! As one designer put it, “it’s hard to hide bad knitwear, you actually can’t fake it.”
6. RELATIONSHIPS
The headline of this article is “Why More Women Are Choosing to Stay Single” and honestly I could’ve written it! The piece covers everything from solo motherhood by choice to the very real financial penalties of living alone (aka the “singles tax”). The takeaway is that more women are actively decentering romantic relationships, not because they’ve given up but because they realized happiness doesn’t have to follow one specific script! I’ll be honest — I’d like to be in a relationship, but dating in New York has been challenging. Reading this was a good reminder that being a single woman isn’t a waiting room. Life is happening right now, either way and I’m going to enjoy it!
