1. STYLE

Have you noticed people showing up to nice restaurants or the theater in what they’d wear to run errands? A NYT reader wrote in to ask if this is the end of “dressing up,” and fashion critic Vanessa Friedman’s answer is worth a read! The consensus from the designers and stylists she consulted: dressing up was never really about formality, it was about intention! Law Roach feels dressed up in jeans and a Hermès scarf. Joseph Altuzarra says a perfectly fitting white tee qualifies. The through line is putting something on that signals to your brain that what’s about to happen is important. I think about this a lot! There’s something about getting dressed with purpose that genuinely changes how I feel, even if I’m not leaving my apartment!

2. INDUSTRY

Lab-grown diamonds have been creeping up for a while now, but this feels like a real turning point! De Beers just announced it’s halting production at South Africa’s largest diamond mine for two years. The mine accounts for over 40% of the country’s diamond production and employs more than 4,000 people! Natural diamond prices have nearly halved since 2022, and consumer demand has fallen sharply. I’m a bit on the fence about lab-grown diamonds when it comes to heirloom pieces, but for trendy everyday styles I think they are absolutely worth buying!

3. CULTURE

Quilting, basket making, bookbinding, knitting… grandma hobbies are having a serious moment, and this journalist went to a folk school in northern Michigan to figure out why! The students are mostly under 35, which tells you everything you need to know! The appeal seems to be a mix of things: craving analog experiences, anxiety about AI making so many skills feel disposable, and the simple pleasure of making something with your hands. One psychologist calls it “meaningful self-forgetfulness” — when you’re focused on a repetitive physical task, the mental noise quiets. I find this so true whether I’m swimming laps or even playing mahjong! What’s your grandma hobby?

4. FRIENDSHIP

The group chats you struggle to keep up with, the six schedules to coordinate for one dinner, the “we should catch up soon” texts sitting unanswered for three weeks — there’s apparently a name for all of it: friendship admin! The invisible labor of keeping adult friendships going has officially entered the cultural conversation, and I feel seen! The part that stuck with me most: adult friendships don’t fall apart because people stop caring, they fall apart because nobody has the bandwidth for the admin. A few things that I’m going to adopt: recurring standing plans, lowering the bar for what counts as keeping in touch (a meme at the right moment genuinely counts), and opting for a “the more the merrier” attitude when there simply isn’t time for one-on-one catch-ups!

5. HEALTH

Last year I got a Prenuvo scan, and the results completely changed my understanding of my back issues! I found out I had an extra vertebra, two disc bulges, and early signs of arthritis. It finally explained years of back pain! So this piece on full-body preventative wellness scans felt very personal. A writer goes in for a scan at a London clinic and documents the whole experience like the mole mapping, the blood work, and the slightly alarming moment of seeing a 3D image of your own body projected on a wall. The premise is simple: catch potential health issues before they become problems! My mom is getting her first Prenuvo scan this week, and I cannot wait to hear what she finds out!

6. MOVIES

Everyone is talking about The Odyssey right now, so this behind-the-scenes look at the hair and makeup was such a fun read! The team used vats of argan oil to keep everyone looking sun-drenched and sea-soaked, and every single scene in the film has the characters coated in varying levels of dirt, so the makeup team had custom products made to match the specific colors of each location: red sand for Troy, black for Hades, white for Calypso’s island. Truly no detail was overlooked, although I’d expect nothing less from a Christopher Nolan movie!
