1. MENTAL HEALTH
Have you heard of panic pouches? It’s the new term for small bags of calming tools people carry around for when anxiety hits! The WSJ asked six people to share what’s in theirs and the variety is really charming: a 10-year-old has a stress ball and gummy worms for wrapping around her fingers; a makeup artist carries Ativan and THC gummies; a journalist presses a hairbrush against her inner wrist as a “nervous system reset.” What would you put in yours?
2. FASHION
In very exciting fashion news, Hermès is launching its first-ever couture line with a runway show at Paris Haute Couture Week in January! Women’s artistic director Nadège Vanhée is leading the project, and the brand is building a dedicated atelier with around 20 specialized artisans. For a fashion house best known for its leather goods, this is a really big move but also a smart one given how resilient Hermès has been while other luxury brands struggle! Very excited to see what they do!
3. BEAUTY
Hands: apparently the final frontier of aesthetics! This Vanity Fair piece makes the point that people spend enormous energy on their faces and bodies to combat signs of aging, but almost always neglect their hands (which can be a dead giveaway). The good news is that prevention is simple: the key is daily SPF (including during gel manicures, since UV lamps cause damage…did not know this!) and a hand cream with retinol (I’ve heard good things about this one).
4. STYLE
Gap has been on a real collab streak lately: Victoria Beckham, Summer Fridays, Béis, and now Hailey Bieber! Apparently she’s been wearing and custom tailoring their jeans for years, so designing her own version feels like an organic partnership. The collection features two baggy styles with her signature and “1996” (her birth year) stamped on the hardware and pocket lining. The campaign is very her — minimal, nostalgic, effortless. I don’t know if this is the Zac Posen effect, but since he joined the brand in 2024 I feel like they’ve been making big moves!
5. CULTURE
This was a really interesting piece on Gen Z forgoing college in favor of trade school! Enrollment at vocational programs grew nearly 20% between 2020 and 2025, driven by skyrocketing tuition, a rough entry-level job market, and real worry about AI taking jobs. The young people profiled are making $80,000-$100,000 a year as electricians, HVAC technicians, and wind turbine repair techs — and feeling pretty secure about their futures! It’s also an alternative path to business ownership. The stigma is still very real, but it’s slowly shifting and certainly worth a conversation.
6. NYC
I waited in quite the line at Birdie’s last month for frozen yogurt, so this deep dive into the city’s line culture felt very personal! Blocks-long lines for fro-yo, croissants, and katsu sandwiches have taken over Brooklyn and the West Village, and the piece tries to figure out why. TikTok and FOMO are the obvious culprits, but the writer makes a point I loved: the only people who seem annoyed by the lines are the ones not standing in them! Everyone actually in line is happy, chatting, and getting dessert. Maybe it’s because I’m still relatively new to the city, but can confirm the vibes are good!
