1. WELLNESS
You know those co-workers, roommates, or family members who wear you down and just generally make life difficult? Researchers have officially coined a term for them: hasslers! A new study found that about a third of people have at least one in their life – someone they can’t seem to escape – and the effects are real! Tension with hasslers is associated with about nine months of faster biological aging! But the conclusion isn’t just to cut everyone difficult out of your life. As one therapist puts it, “annoyance is the price you pay for community.” Hasslers may be a nuisance, but are often also the people who show up when you actually need them!
2. DATING
This was a fun read: “I went on 53 first dates in one summer. Here’s a look at my spreadsheet.”A woman going through her second divorce decides to go on 53 first dates in one summer, armed with a spreadsheet to track what she wore and which stories she’d already told! The dates she describes are absolutely unhinged: the man who ignored her to flirt with the waitress, the date who had a panic attack and excused himself to call his therapist mid-meal, the guy who showed up looking nothing like his photo, and the man who lived with his mom and drove a weed-smelling minivan. In a plot twist, she ends up marrying one of them…but I won’t spoil it! Possibly the most charming thing I’ve read all week!
3. NYC
I’m not sure how I feel about this, but New York’s skies are about to get a lot more crowded! A cargo drone is already making test runs across the East River between lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, flying electric taxis recently completed demonstration flights between JFK and Manhattan, and there’s a fully functioning prototype of an electric car that can lift off vertically when it gets stuck in traffic. And the most surprising part is that all of this technology isn’t that far off! Can you imagine a future of flying rideshares able to land anywhere? Or every building having a landing pad on the roof? It would certainly make my trips to JFK easier…
4. FASHION
If you’ve been seeing Margaux shoes everywhere lately, this piece explains why! The brand launched in 2015 during the height of the DTC boom, when it quietly became a favorite among fashion editors and stylists – and they’ve only grown from there! What sets them apart is that they were designed to be both beautiful and actually comfortable, plus they’re available in a rare extended size range! The founders were noticing women constantly changing shoes on the sidewalk outside their offices, and set out to design a stylish shoe focused on proper fit and comfort. I think their square toe ballet flats are chic, and I spotted these wrap sandals I’d love to try!
5. COOKING
This beginner’s guide to grilling is perfectly timed for summer and full of useful advice! Grilling has always been one of those things that intimidates me, so I appreciated how practical this was. A few tips worth flagging: always open the hood before lighting a gas grill (leaving it closed lets gas build up, not good!), create two heat zones so you have a hot side for searing and a cooler side for finishing, and always preheat for 10-15 minutes before you start cooking. One of the best tips: start with forgiving proteins like chicken thighs or flank steak! Could this summer be my grilling era?
6. DESIGN
I had never heard of Paul R. Williams before reading this, but now I can’t stop thinking about him! He designed around 3,000 buildings in Los Angeles – the Theme Building at LAX, estates for Frank Sinatra and Lucille Ball – and was the first licensed Black architect west of the Mississippi. He re-designed the Beverly Hills Hotel’s Crescent Wing and The Polo Lounge, but wasn’t allowed to eat there… yet it’s his handwriting on the hotel’s iconic signage. This summer three LA museums are dedicating simultaneous exhibits to his work, and reading this piece I kept thinking: how is he not more famous? Incredible story!
