1. INDUSTRY
Glamour magazine was once known for everything from fashion and beauty coverage to serious reporting on issues affecting women, but after another round of layoffs the publication is now shifting heavily toward shopping content and affiliate links. The bigger story here is how dramatically media consumption has changed. Instead of turning to magazines for style advice and cultural commentary, people are increasingly getting that information from Substack writers, creators, TikTok, Instagram, and even AI! I suppose as a creator myself this should be good news to me, but I can’t help but feel a bit sad about the decline of women’s magazines! Remember when we all wanted to be like Andie Anderson and Jenna Rink?
2. FASHION
This was a very fun listen – an interview with La DoubleJ founder JJ Martin on how she built one of fashion’s most recognizable print-driven brands! She started as a journalist in Milan, became obsessed with vintage fashion and Italian craftsmanship, and eventually turned that passion into a global brand known for bold prints and unapologetically happy clothes! I was also excited to hear about the brand’s new five-story NYC flagship, which includes not only fashion and home goods but a meditation and sound healing space. It’s a very different vision of what a retail store can be, and feels perfectly aligned with the joyful, maximalist world of La DoubleJ!
3. HAIRCARE
I feel like hair washing is one of those topics where everyone swears by a completely different routine. Wash every day! Wash once a week! Never use sulfates! Always double shampoo! This article breaks down the science-backed way to wash your hair, and the advice is quite practical. Dermatologists recommend focusing shampoo on your scalp and roots (not scrubbing the lengths of your hair), using only a quarter-sized amount of product, rinsing thoroughly, and following up with conditioner on the ends. Another tip I hadn’t heard before: use lukewarm water instead of hot water, which can strip away oils and leave both your scalp and hair drier. Simple, but useful! Unfortunately, I prefer a scalding shower.
4. STYLE
I’m obsessed with Dua Lipa’s civil ceremony look! Instead of a traditional dress, she wore a custom Schiaparelli skirt suit complete with a dramatic hat, instantly putting her in the company of iconic brides like Bianca Jagger (who famously wore a YSL skirt suit to her 1971 wedding, and whose look Dua’s outfit was likely inspired by). Could this kick off a new wave of bridal tailoring? I certainly hope so! We’ve already seen brides move away from the big princess dress aesthetic and toward something a little more personal and fashion-forward. I’m on the edge of my seat to see what she wears for their larger wedding in Sicily!
5. HEALTH
Walking clubs seem to be having a major moment right now, and it’s easy to see why! They combine three things a lot of people are craving: movement, community, and a social activity that doesn’t revolve around spending money or drinking alcohol. Groups are popping up in cities all over the country, giving people a low-pressure way to meet new friends while getting some fresh air and exercise at the same time! As someone who loves a long walk with a friend, this trend makes perfect sense to me… and it’s ideal for me now that I can’t run anymore!
6. BEAUTY
It’s kind of wild to realize that Marilyn Monroe may have been one of the original personal branding experts. A century after her birth, this article argues that her real genius wasn’t just her beauty, but how intentionally she created it! Norma Jeane transformed herself into Marilyn by borrowing elements she admired from other actresses, working closely with makeup artists and photographers, and obsessing over every detail of her image! Reading this, I couldn’t help but think about how normal that feels today. Influencers build their specific aesthetics, celebrities launch beauty brands, and everyone curates their online presence! Marilyn was essentially doing all of that decades before Instagram existed… no wonder her influence still feels so relevant 100 years later.
