It definitely seems to the be motto here in New York, that’s for sure! While black certainly counts as a “basic”, you can select separates of the statement staple variety for maximum impact. I’ve shared my praise for this Khaite top ad nauseam, but there’s no debating I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of it! Even now when I wear it out I receive a number of compliments – it’s just that good. Yes, it’s a versatile black top, but the rounded, sculptural neckline makes it stand out from the rest. I don’t plan to retire it anytime soon, so if you’re sick of it… sorry, not sorry! It’s mostly sold out now, but you can snag it in a large and an XL here and here! I’m wearing the small.

A couple of other black separates I scored more recently include this oversized wool blazer by WARDROBE NYC and this suiting skirt by Toteme. WARDROBE NYC is a brand I’d seen online but never shopped! I spotted this blazer marked down to final sale on Shopbop at the start of summer, and with a promo code I managed to get it for $420 (down from $1,250)! While that’s not typically a time I am purchasing fall/winter fashion, the discount was too good to resist! It fills a void in my closet and I know it will be incredibly useful. Upon delivery, I was delighted to discover how heavyweight the wool is. It is PERFECT for New York’s cold weather season! It’s 100% wool, so it’s sturdy and incredibly warm. I found it on FarFetch at full price in a small and a large – it runs very oversized, so size down! I’m in the XS.

The Toteme skirt is one I tried on in store while my mom was here in October. The sales associate helping us was wearing it and styled it in such a simple, chic way! I had to try it on and was honestly surprised how much I loved it on. Straight silhouettes like this usually aren’t my friend, but it’s truly tailored to perfection. It’s such a stunner! While I’ve dressed it up here with my other black separates, the sales associate styled it with a simple black tee and these kitten heel pumps. Very city-chic!
