New York City

A FALL WEEKEND WITH MY MOM IN THE CITY

10.08

Even though I just got back from my Sag Harbor trip with my family a couple weeks ago, my mom flew up to New York City last week for a fun fall weekend in the city with me! It was such a fun and fabulous few days. We shopped, we ate, we drank, we visited the Kips Bay Showhouse and the Morgan Library… it was a whirlwind of a weekend, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! Since I have so much content from everything we did over the last few days, I thought it would be fun to compile it into a post/newsletter for today. Keep scrolling for all of my outfits, where we ate, what we found while shopping and more from our girls weekend in the city!

PS: I updated my New York City travel guide with some of the new spots we visited this weekend, so definitely check that out if you’re looking for more comprehensive recommendations! It’s organized by location/neighborhood and a description so you know what you’d be getting into at each spot. Enjoy!

SHOPPING AROUND THE WEST VILLAGE

SHOP MY OUTFIT: JACKET // TEE // JEANS // SIMILAR CHANEL BAG // FLATS // SUNGLASSES // BELT

My mom got in around 2pm, so we just bopped around the West Village for a few hours! We popped in Two:Minds, where I spotted these beautiful floral-shaped gold hoops by Bea Bongiasca. I couldn’t find the exact pair online, but I linked three variations of them here! Something I did pick up though, was this faux leather trimmed sherpa jacket at Anine Bing. My mom and I thought it was such a cute and casual piece for everyday wear this fall!

DINNER & DESSERT IN GRAMERCY

SHOP MY OUTFIT: SIMILAR BLAZER // TOP // JEANS // BAG // SANDALS // BELT // SIMILAR EARRINGS

I wanted to show my mom around Gramercy (my future neighborhood), so we grabbed dinner at Oceans. It’s a fairly low key spot but the food is great! I love the Rocketman roll. Afterwards we grabbed ice cream at Cafe Panna down the street! Always delicious and worth waiting in line for.

SHOPPING AROUND SOHO

SHOP MY OUTFIT: JACKET // TEE // JEANS // HERMES BAG // FLATS // SUNGLASSES // BELT // EARRINGS

We did a bit of shopping in SoHo before lunch on Friday! We popped into Alaia first, where we both tried on these new wedge mules. They’re suuuuper chic but are pretty heavy – I passed on them, but they really are gorgeous! Afterwards we stopped in Proenza Schouler where my mom and I both scored. She picked up this super soft turtleneck top – I tried it on too, but wasn’t sure how often I’d wear it. This chunky fair isle sweater came home with me! I am still thinking about these pants, so I may end up ordering them at some point. Size down if you’re ordering them! I did end up also ordering these flats in brown yesterday! They didn’t have my size in store. This dress was another winner, but I didn’t buy it – but it was SUPER comfortable/stretchy and the silhouette has a very flattering waistline! The last store we had time for was Dries Van Noten, who just opened their new SoHo boutique about five months ago. I wasn’t expecting to buy anything there, but was captivated by this jacquard bib sweater! I took it home and wore it that night for dinner. It’s such a beautiful, interesting piece! The texture is cozy, the colors are rich and it’ll be a great piece to layer over a button-down, blouse or sweater with jeans for casual-but-polished everyday outfits this season.

LUNCH AT I SODI & THE KIPS BAY SHOWHOUSE

After our brief SoHo shopping trip, we had lunch in the garden at I Sodi! This spot is hard to get into at dinner, like Via Carota, but it’s fairly easy to snag a lunch res. It’s a go-to! They have amazingggg food. We ordered the burrata and a deliciously light salad, followed by our own pasta entrees. I got the lemon papardelle, which is may favorite! My mom got the risotto with zucchini, mint and basil. She loved hers too!

After lunch we popped by the Kips Bay Showhouse! It was fun to see it done in New York, especially after touring previous showhouses in Dallas and Palm Beach. It’s definitely a different experience, because although it was a large building, many of the rooms were so small it naturally limited what the interior designers could do. Still, it was fun to see! Our favorite floor was the second floor – the spaces on that floor were larger. The neutral living room, fabulous dining room and marble bathroom were all on that floor!

DRINKS AT THE GANSEVOORT ROOFTOP + DINNER AT THE GOLDEN SWAN

SHOP MY OUTFIT: JACQUARD BIB SWEATER // ZARA TOP (OLD) // JEANS // BAG // BOOTS // EARRINGS

Since it’s close to my apartment, my mom stayed at The Gansevoort this trip so we could go on morning walks together! She ended up really enjoying her stay there and said it was a way better experience than her stay at The Standard last time. She had a hotel credit, so we grabbed drinks on the rooftop before dinner and it was so nice out! I wouldn’t necessarily put this on your list of to-do’s, but if you’re in the neighborhood on a nice evening it’s a good backup. For dinner we walked over to The Golden Swan, a favorite of my mom’s from her list visit. The upstairs is more of a cozy fine dining experience, while the bar downstairs is a cool, casual vibe. My mom prefers the upstairs setting, and also loves Dover sole which is always on the menu!

SHOPPING & LUNCH ON THE UPPER EAST SIDE

SHOP MY OUTFIT: TOP (ALSO AVAILABLE HERE & HERE) // JEANS (ALSO AVAILABLE HERE & HERE) // SIMILAR CHANEL BAG // BELT // SIMILAR SLINGBACKS

Saturday morning was spent shopping on Madison Avenue, where we popped in Hermes, Chanel, Toteme and Khaite before grabbing lunch with my friend Patti and her mother at Le Charlot. My mom and I both found scarves at Hermes (this is the one I got), and then I picked up this clutch and suiting skirt at Toteme, while my mom bought these kitten-heeled pumps! I was very tempted by this shearling coat, but sadly it’s not in my budget at the moment. I also tried these on because I am all about this color this season, but they were a little too stiff for me. I was also eyeing these shearling-trim riding boots at Hermes until I saw the price tag!! A successful morning, though, if I do say so myself!

VISITING THE MORGAN LIBRARY

The one cultural thing we did over the weekend was visit The Morgan Library! It began as J. Pierpont Morgan’s private collection of rare books and manuscripts, and then his son transformed it into a public institution! The collections include manuscripts, drawings, prints, ancient artifacts and musical scores. The collection was managed by J. Pierpont Morgan’s librarian, Belle de Costa Greene, a Black woman who passed as white to navigate racially segregated America. She stayed with the institution until her retirement in 1948! It’s a very impressive story and space.

DRINKS AT THE PORTRAIT BAR

SHOP MY OUTFIT: SIMILAR DRESS // SIMILAR CHANEL BAG // BELT // CHANEL SLINGBACKS

Saturday night we had dinner planned at Cafe Carmellini, which is situated in the Fifth Avenue hotel! I suggested we go a bit early for a drink at The Portrait Bar, also inside the hotel. It was my first time at the hotel, the bar and the restaurant and I am SO impressed! The bar interiors are elegant, cozy and inviting with velvet seating, red accents and walls and bookshelves adorned with portrait art. It’s beautiful!!! We ordered a drink and a couple of parlor snacks – the crispy oysters and the comte gougeres, which were out of this world incredible. I could have stayed there all night long!

DINNER AT CAFE CARMELLINI

After our initial cocktail and bites, we walked into the restaurant and continued to be in awe the rest of the evening. From the setting, service, presentation and quality of the food, everything at Cafe Carmellini was exceptional! We loved every bite! My mom got the zucchini blossom appetizer, while I had the artichokes Provençal. For our entrees she got the squab en croute and I had the veal! For dessert we enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding and the olive oil & sorrento lemon coppa. Divine from start to finish!
