I can’t believe I only have one week left in Carlsbad for the year! I always love my three weeks out here each summer. Also, I’ve been hosting friends and family the whole time, it’s gone by SO fast. If I host as many people next year, I might consider buying an extra week. So, I have a little more free time on my own. Or perhaps I’ll come out for a week in February or March while winter is settled in back in New York? Who knows, but either way I’m sad to be leaving next weekend.
My time out here is always a great reset for me. It’s the one moment all year where I take a step back from my usual work routine to give myself space from screen time. This means both on my phone and on my computer. Also, it gives me a chance to think about the bigger picture. Then, I can take on the final, busiest season of the year with a renewed sense of purpose and more focused goals. Especially as I make the move to living full time in New York, I have a few new things to consider. Also, I want to make sure I’m using my time most effectively and working efficiently!
Before I discuss this outfit, a quick heads up that I’ve updated my San Diego city guide. To be clear, it’s not really about San Diego. We mostly shop, eat and hang out in La Jolla, Del Mar, Encinitas and Carlsbad, but to keep things simple for the travel page it’s all under the San Diego tab. If you’re headed to these areas anytime soon, don’t miss this page. Here I share my favorite restaurants, hotels and things to do!
A SKIRT WITH STATEMENT STAPLE APPEAL
I wore my favorite Zara tee (only $26!) and this fun Fabrique midi skirt for my first dinner in Paris on my trip in July! While I love the look of a bias-cut skirt on other people, it’s not a silhouette I gravitate towards. So, I loved how this silk-wool satin midi skirt had the similar look but with more of an A-line silhouette! This skirt evokes the “maximalism for minimalists” trend I chatted about in last week’s podcast episode from this Vogue article. It’s a solid neutral, classic black skirt, but it features some eye-catching details that add texture and interest.
The 3D floral appliques add a little romance and whimsy to an otherwise simple style. It takes basic to statement staple territory! I let the skirt do the talking with a simple white tee for dinner in Paris, but I can’t wait to play with it this fall/winter with cozy sweaters, blazers and more. I’m wearing the small here and it is a perfect fit!
Separately, while I’m excited to incorporate thong sandals back into my shoe collection, it’s been at least a decade since I’ve worn this silhouette. I ordered a number of styles to try. Each one was more uncomfortable than the last, until I found this pair! The leather is super soft and smooth and the heel is just the right height. Despite the fact that these are undeniably comfortable, I got blisters because I haven’t worn a strap between my toes in a very long time. It’s going to take some getting used to, but hopefully that spot will toughen up so it’s not so sensitive when wearing flip-flops/thongs in the future!
