If you’ve been following me for the last year (or even the last few months), you’ll know this Khaite top is everything to me. I snagged it on major sale when Matches Fashion shuttered (RIP) last May! The original/current price to buy the Jericho top is $790, but I acquired it for under $400. Still pricey, but I have absolutely obliterated the cost per wear since it arrived in the mail! In the warmer months of the year, I swear I wore this top at least once a week. It looks super sleek and modern on its own, but also looks amazing styled under all kinds of blazers and jackets! The structural, rounded neckline is so unique and really sets it apart from other styles in my wardrobe. I receive compliments on it every time I wear it! Needless to say, I’ve worn it… a lot. It’s been about as useful as a white t-shirt!
Because I’ve worn it so much, it’s naturally visited the dry cleaners at least a dozen times – I’m not going to tell you it gets cleaned after every wear, because that would be a straight up lie. But it’s gone to the cleaner’s a bunch! Not once have I ever gotten it back damaged or had any issues on previous trips, until last week in Austin. While hanging up my newly cleaned goods, I discovered a tragedy had befallen my beloved top. It looked like the knit fabric had gotten into a fight with velcro! This top is made of thick, tightly ribbed knit, so any disruption to the lines and structure is incredibly obvious. It looked like areas of the fabric at been burned and puffed up – as is, I wouldn’t be able to wear it again. While I definitely thought about heading right over to the cleaners to chew them out, I decided to order a fabric shaver for pilling on sweaters to try that first. I’d never used one before, but have heard they work like magic in making worn sweaters look like new again!
The fabric shaver arrived on Wednesday, and much to my surprise and delight, the little shaver that could worked its witchcraft on my top! While it got rid of the excess, puffed out fabric, if you look closely you can definitely tell it’s not as pristine looking as it was before the trip to the dry cleaner’s… but it’s good enough for me. I’m just happy I don’t have to scrap it and spend full price on replacing it! Truthfully, if I had to I would though. This top has been so good to me this past year and I would gladly spend another small fortune on it if it meant I got to keep wearing it! All of that to say, if you’ve been thinking about investing in this top, I can’t recommend it enough… but only take it to a dry cleaner you trust and make sure they handle it with care!
PS: this fabric shaver is my new favorite toy! I plan to spend some time this weekend take it to each sweater in my closet. I have heard you have to be careful with certain knits, like mohair – so just do your research before you use it on your whole sweater collection!
