This time of year brings a unique chance to get creative with your wardrobe, combining function and fashion in ways that are not only practical but incredibly chic. Whether you’re braving the cold for a day of shopping or layering up for a cozy weekend brunch, the key to mastering the art of layering is balance, texture, and a little bit of flair. Layering is essential for staying stylish and warm during the fall/winter seasons, but it’s also a chance to get creative with your wardrobe!
I love this look I put together in New York and have worn it on repeat since. The combination of the rich olive green + chocolate brown layers, with just a peek of white at the collar is stylish and very comfy-cozy! To achieve this look, put on a basic white crewneck tee, but put it on backwards – the back of a tee comes up higher than the front, making it visible just above the neckline of most crewneck sweaters. Such an easy tip to incorporate into your everyday look that really makes an impact!
Here are some additional tips to help you layer effortlessly while keeping your outfits fashion-forward this season:
START WITH A BASE LAYER
- Choose sleek, fitted pieces: think a bodysuit, fitted turtleneck or long-sleeve t-shirt!
- Nothing but neutrals: stick to neutral shades (black, white gray, beige) for your base. This will act as a blank canvas for more textured pieces on top!
ADD A TEXTURED MIDDLE LAYER
- Chunky knits: A cozy sweater adds depth to your look and extra warmth. Choose patterns like cable knits, ribbing, or even crochet for more texture!
- Button-up shirts: For a more casual-cool touch, layer a denim shirt or shirt jacket over your base layer.
PLAY WITH PROPORTIONS
- Balance oversized with fitted: If you’re wearing a voluminous sweater or jacket, balance it with more fitted pants or leggings to avoid feeling overwhelmed by your layers. I’d also say that if your top layer is oversized, your mid layer should also be more fitted for a more flattering look.
- Play with varying lengths: Try layering a cropped sweater over a tunic-length button down for a more preppy vibe.
