After a whirlwind couple of months, tomorrow I’ll be flying back to New York for an extended stay until Thanksgiving. I am eagerly anticipating the fabulous fall temps and activities that await me in the city, and can’t wait to stay put and settle into city life again for a bit! Having spent much more time there this year + my five week stay last fall, I identified a glaring hole in my wardrobe. The one thing you need in a walking city like New York is a variety of jacket options! When I arrived in New York last October, I had a single quilted jacket and a black tweed jacket, along with a trench and a lightweight Toteme coat. While I used the tweed jacket a bunch for dinners and nights out, I ended up relying on the quilted jacket a little too much during the day because it was my only casual option. As I’ve spent more time in the city, it’s become increasingly obvious that I need to diversify my topper selection! This season I’ve made great strides already in securing some new layers, but the one I’m most excited about is this plaid print barn jacket.

The barn jacket is certainly having a moment right now, and while the solid styles are great basics, I just couldn’t resist the seasonal hues featured in this check print piece. It features a muddy green hue, navy, burgundy and yellow, but with a contrasting black corduroy collar that will make it easy to style with my favorite black basics! The oversized fit is essential for styling over chunky sweaters as the temperatures continue to drop, and it’s the perfect daytime layer. It’s not super heavy, so I can wear it early in the season too! I just know it’s going to be so useful for throwing over my favorite casual looks for errands, lunches out and daytime events around town. As far as sizing goes, I opted for the small – it’s slightly oversized as I mention before, which will be great for styling over sweaters. This particular barn jacket is under $200, but there are plenty of options at various price points if you’re looking to save or don’t mind a splurge for the right piece! Mine is currently sold out, but I have a feeling it will come back in stock! This one is by the same label and while it’s not entirely plaid, it features peeks of plaid in the lining. If you’re looking for a budget buy to try the trend for less, this H&M style is a winner. The leather collar and shiny buttons elevate this Rag & Bone style!
