Something I’ve really leaned into since I began spending more time in New York is architectural dressing. It’s a fashion approach that focuses on often all-black (or at the very least streamlined neutrals), minimalist looks emphasized by striking, sculptural silhouettes and high-quality fabrics. Instead of wild colors, prints, or over-the-top embellishments, shape speaks louder than detail. What I love about this approach is that it allows me to carry pieces through many seasons as opposed to things feeling dated so quickly, as they often do with recognizable prints or flash-in-the-pan, trend-driven details!
Let’s take this blazer “dress” as an example. I use dress in quotes because it is far too short (at least on me) to be considered a dress! The structured, suiting-inspired LBD is absolutely having a moment – for example, exhibit A, B, C and D. While the look feels fresh and chic right now, it’s a timeless piece that won’t feel tired if I pull it out again year after year. What’s more classic than a perfectly tailored black blazer? When I invest in something I want to know it has longevity, which is why architectural dressing feels like a good way to go. At the very least, it’s a good approach for finding quality building blocks to create a solid wardrobe foundation.
Below are some silhouettes I’m loving from labels who do architectural dressing oh so well!
