My Day-To-Day Routine | The Style Scribe

In an effort to share more lifestyle content, I thought I’d put together a post on what a typical day looks like for me. I often receive questions about how I stay motivated to work out, stick to a work schedule for the blog, etc since I work from home, so hopefully this will help answer some of those questions and give you some insight into how I do things. I’m setting it up like Harper’s Bazaar does their 24 hours profiles – hope you guys like it!

6:00-7:00am: depending on what I have going on that day, I usually wake up somewhere in here. I only need to hear my alarm once to get up – I have many friends who set alarms at 6:30, 6:35, 6:48, etc, but I’m up at the first sound! I’m a pretty light sleeper, and as a single lady living alone, I also tend to get a little jumpy when I hear creaks and other sounds at night… which is also why I have this sound machine now. It’s the best! It just sounds like a fan is going.

7:15am: by now I usually have my workout clothes on, contacts in and teeth brushed. That is unless I’ve fallen into the black hole of Instagram… As I said above, once I’m up, I’m up! I get up and at ’em pretty quickly.

7:30am: I typically eat my breakfast at my desk while I catch up on emails, and schedule Tweets and Facebook posts promoting that day’s blog content. This is also the time where I go through the new arrivals pages on my favorite websites to add things to THE SHOP! Breakfast either consists of fruit, a smoothie (recipe here, but now without coffee because I found out I have acid reflux!), or chia seed pudding. Every once in awhile I’ll throw in cereal, overnight oats, or an egg dish to spice things up.

8:30am: If it’s Tuesday or Thursday, I usually always have FlyWheel at 8:30am with Lesley – she’s one of my favorite instructors (and the one I go to most) and is super motivating throughout class! Sometimes I’ll go to an earlier class if I have more going on that day though! If it’s a BBG day, sometimes I start at 7:30 or 8am.. sometimes I don’t… Depends on how much procrastinating I do – I will say that it’s always harder the longer I put it off! I’m not one of those people who can count on afternoon workouts… I can talk myself out of anything in the afternoon. Unplanned dinners and get togethers with friends always pop up throughout the week, so I don’t want to give myself an excuse to skip my workouts! I also prefer to only shower once a day, so I like to knock out my exercise in the morning and get getting ready out of the way.

9:30am: Before I hop in the shower, I usually sit back down at my desk for a few minutes to see if there’s anything urgent I need to respond to or get done for a collaboration before I start getting ready for the day.

10:00am: Once I’m out of the shower, it typically takes me only 15-20 minutes to blow dry my hair and go through my everyday makeup routine. Maybe it’s my punctual nature, but I’m very quick about it. I’m always the first of my friends to get ready for a night out and usually have to sit and wait once I’m done haha. Unless I’m doing a smokey eye or curling my hair, it never takes me more than 30 minutes to go from the shower to out the door.

10:30am: Now that I’m ready for the day, I’ll sit back down at my desk for a few hours to get some writing done. I focus much better in the morning, so I try to write all of my blog post text at this time!

1:00pm: Unless I’m super hungry or had a really light breakfast, I try not to eat lunch until 12:30 or 1pm. I’m one of those people who gets desperately hungry in the afternoon, so it’s best if I eat a somewhat later lunch and an earlier dinner to avoid snacking on unnecessary things all day.

1:30pm-4:00pm: On Tuesday and Thursday, this is when Becca (my intern!) arrives. While she works on scheduling Tweets and Facebook posts promoting items in THE SHOP (and other content like YouTube, my newsletter, and SnapChat), I’m usually working on collages like THE EDIT, AT ANY AGE, UNDER $100, etc. Becca will also research and brainstorm for things like YouTube video ideas, holiday content, lifestyle stuff, etc on these days. Since I’m finally in my new house and have been trying to shoot more indoors for these lifestyle/beauty/fitness posts, we spend a good amount of time on these afternoons shooting in different spaces at home. On Monday and Friday when Becca doesn’t come in, I work on editing photos, shooting videos (and editing those), work on collages, etc. On Wednesday, Becca comes in from 4:45-7pm or so to shoot outfits outside! I usually shoot three outfits each Wednesday so I’m set for the next full week each time she leaves for the weekend. Having an editorial calendar is very helpful in keeping track of what I need to shoot, what days I have open for different content, and what my deadlines are for big projects! I keep this editorial calendar in Google Sheets (basically Excel), which is separate from my iCal. My iCal is where I’ll put meetings, appointments, reminders to shoot certain things while Becca is at my house, etc.

4:00pm: I usually edit photos we’ve taken that day after Becca leaves. It can take awhile, so sometimes I work late if it’s for a project coming up or I know I’m going to be shooting a bunch the next few days and want to get stuff out of the way. Especially on Wednesday nights when she doesn’t leave until 7! I also always schedule the next day’s newsletter before I have dinner, because once I’ve eaten I try to stop doing work for the rest of the night.

5:30-6:00pm: As I said earlier, I start salivating at like 3pm, so I start cooking dinner rather early. Unless I’m grabbing dinner with friends or going out, I’ll cook for myself – usually something healthy. I’m such a creature of habit, so I have a good rotation of recipes that I just never get sick of: these lettuce wrap tacos, this cauliflower pasta, these zucchini noodles, etc. If it’s a busy week or I just have no interest in cooking, I’ll pick up a salad or a few ready-made things from Snap Kitchen, Eatzie’s or Whole Foods.

7:00-9:00pm: Unless it’s Wednesday and I’ve just finished shooting with Becca, I’ve probably already eaten and just want to lounge. I’ll plop down in front of the TV and watch a few episodes of shows I’m into (just finished Parenthood – soooo good!).

9:15pm: Unless I’ve gone out to dinner, I try to start getting ready for bed around this time. I try to be in bed by 10pm or so (TV still on, obviously), but I really like to have the lights off in my room for at least an hour before I plan to go to sleep. It takes my mind awhile to turn off and quiet down. My nighttime skincare routine doesn’t take me super long, but it’s one of those things where I do one thing and get sucked into the TV before I move on to the rest of the steps.

10:00pm: I’m probably in bed with the lights off, the TV on and my sound machine on. I’ll watch another episode or two of TV, and then I’ll turn the TV off and fall asleep around 11:15/11:30pm. While I’d definitely say I’m more of a morning person than a night owl, I need a full night’s sleep to function. If I know I’m waking up super early, I’ll go to sleep super early. Just depends on what I’ve got going on that week!

PS – how cute is this sleep shirt?! My friend Monika recently collaborated with The Sleep Shirt to design a collection of cute, comfortable sleep shirts and dresses and I have been livingggg in mine. Plus, it looks great in my blue + white bedroom, don’t you think? Click here to discover the collection!!
